Welcome to part three of our Hot Hot August series on sex and dreams! Today we are looking at public nudity in dreams - not necessarily about sex, but it’s close! And it is so, so common.
What are the scenarios dreamers find themselves nude in a dream?
You hear about the classic ‘standing in front of a classroom buck naked’ dream (or ‘nekkid’ if you’re from the South), but this can include being nude while engaging in a sex act in a dream, buying cheetos and all of a sudden you’re naked, maybe you’re stripping? There are a lot of opportunities to be naked in dreams.
Let’s dig in, what does it mean to be naked in a dream?
This dream traditionally has a negative connotation. Now whether or not someone else in the dream noticed their nudity, the vulnerability and exposure experienced by the dreamer says a lot about their fear. Our friend Aunty Flo describes clothing as a “mask” in dreams and by removing the mask for all to see, we expose ourselves greatly and make ourselves vulnerable. This could mirror a situation in the dreamer’s life where they felt exposed or open to rejection in real life, like starting a new job or sharing
Calling Brené Brown! Vulnerability and shame, table for 2! Okay what if no one notices you’re even naked but you’re still bothered by it?
Similar to the “taking a test” dream, public nudity can symbolize your subconscious’s fear of feeling unprepared! What are you feeling unprepared about? Oftentimes if you’re currently attending school and you dream about showing up naked to school, it can be related to feeling exposed or vulnerable at school.
What if you show up to school and you’re naked in a dream, but you haven’t been in school for several years?
Still similar to the test dream, school is such a place of high emotions and high expectations, it’s very high stakes for academics or social circles for some, that your brain continues to use this location in a dream to symbolize the stress you are feeling in real life. Do you feel unprepared and vulnerable in your real life? Being back at school and wearing your birthday suit, or partial birthday suit, could very easily manifest in your dreams.
Is there a difference in partial nudity versus full on nudity?
We really could not find a ton of research that indicated one version of nudity had a different meaning that the other. In our own personal experience, I have had dreams where I don’t have pants on and I am so ungodly embarrassed, and other dreams where I was totally naked and felt as free as a bird.
All right so what does it mean when you dream about being nude in a dream and not caring?
Braveheart said it best - “FREEDOM!!!!!!!” Paint my face blue and let me fight the British aristocracy because baby I am free! For real though, this is a fun dream where you’re feeling good about who you are and you are not afraid to show yourself to the world. That is the ultimate goal, right? That said, you can also be conceited and arrogant in the dream, which can be attributed to guilt about arrogance or a lack of modesty in real life.
What are some of the old school interpretations of dreaming about nudity?
There are some good ones! According to The Dreamer’s Dictionary, “In one aspect this is a dream of contrary, and that is if the nakedness was your own, you can expect a stroke of money luck or an improvement in circumstances; but dreaming of others being naked suggests that you will inadvertently uncover a deception within your close circle.”
Here’s another one from Aunty Flo: If you are in love then this dream foretells that you are likely to find difficulties in getting married and that you love affair must be your main priority over the next six months. If you are already married this dream can signify infidelity in a partner which will bring out great misery. The other meaning of this dream is that it shows that you may encounter some disobedient children in the future. If you are blushing or embarrassed in your dream and your confidence is being affected, then this dream represents that it is important that you to avoid some type of social event.
